This buzzing city mixes ancient wonders with modern life in a way that’s totally unique. Imagine a city metropolis with ancient pyramids and a desert in the background, that’s Cairo!

The Great Pyramids: A Must-See Wonder

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Giza Pyramids. Standing in front of these massive structures made me feel tiny! These amazing monuments have survived for over 4,500 years.

Museum Magic in Cairo

Cairo has amazing museums that bring ancient history to life. I visited the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) which houses an incredible collection of mummies. The Museum of Ancient Antiquities is another treasure trove filled with artifacts from King Tut’s tomb and other priceless pieces.

If museums make you hungry (they always do for me!), I found the perfect spot for authentic Egyptian cuisine. El Dar Darak served the most delicious koshari (a mix of rice, lentils, and pasta topped with a spicy tomato sauce). The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere made it feel like dining in an Egyptian home!

Where to Stay in Cairo

Finding a good hotel in Cairo can be overwhelming. I recommend staying near the Nile for the best views and easy access to attractions. Luxor: An Open-Air Museum

After the busy streets of Cairo, Luxor felt like stepping into a peaceful, open-air museum! This city, built on the site of ancient Thebes, is home to some of the best-preserved temples and tombs in Egypt.

The Valley of the Kings left me speechless. This ancient burial ground contains over 60 tombs of pharaohs and nobles, including King Tutankhamun. The colorful wall paintings inside the tombs look as vivid today as they did thousands of years ago!

Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple: A Woman’s Power

One of my favorite spots was Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple. This amazing structure was built by one of Egypt’s few female pharaohs. The temple is built into a cliff face and has three massive terraces rising up toward the mountain. It’s a perfect spot for breathtaking photos, especially if you visit in the morning before it gets too hot.

Don’t forget to bring a wide-brimmed hat like one of these and plenty of sunscreen – the Egyptian sun is no joke!

Karnak and Luxor Temples: Walking with Gods

Karnak Temple complex is simply enormous. Its massive pillars in the Great Hypostyle Hall will make your jaw drop! I spent hours exploring the many sections of this temple dedicated to the god Amun.

Luxor Temple is equally impressive, especially when lit up at night. Don’t miss the Avenue of Sphinxes, a 1.7-mile path lined with sphinx statues that once connected Luxor and Karnak temples. Walking this ancient road as the sun sets is a magical experience.

Tips for Your Egyptian Adventure

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Egypt is between October and May when temperatures are milder. I went in February and found it perfect – warm days but not the scorching heat of summer.

What to Pack

Egypt requires modest clothing, especially for women. I found these lightweight, loose pants perfect for staying cool while respecting local customs. Don’t forget a good power adapter, as Egypt uses the European-style plugs. This universal adapter worked perfectly for charging my phone and camera.

Getting Around

While taxis are plentiful, I recommend arranging transportation through your hotel or tour company. If you stay at the St. George they will help you 24/7 and it arrives in like 5 minutes!

For crossing the Nile in Luxor, take a local ferry for a fun and affordable experience!
